Buy Stamps!

On October 27, 2003, the United States Post Office unveiled the new "Stop Family Violence" stamp. This stamp, which costs 45 cents instead of the usual 39 cents, was issued by the U.S. Postal Service to help fund domestic violence services. The additional six cents resulting from the sale of this stamp will benefit the family violence programs funded by the Federal Executive Office of Health and Human Services.

In addition to raising much-needed funding, this stamp is a great way to raise awareness about the epidemic of domestic violence in our communities. Please help us in the ongoing fight to end family violence by purchasing these stamps online or at your local post office. Let your family and friends know that you are committed to this important cause by using the "Stop Family Violence" postal stamp on the holiday cards you send out this year. This small gesture will truly help make a big difference in the struggle to make every home a safe home.

There is no effort that is too small. Shelters depend on the generosity of volunteers to read to children, serve on the Board, cook meals, answer the phones, and a variety of other responsibilities. Contact the shelter in your community to inquire about volunteer opportunities.

Make a wish come true!

Many shelters keep a "wishlist" documenting items that would be beneficial in providing the best possible services to survivors. Most shelter programs are always grateful for donations such as: diapers, canned foods, calling cards, bus tickets, gas cards, new or lightly used toys, copy paper, blankets, and toiletries. Victims of violence often have to start over from scratch. Therefore, donations of household items are deeply appreciated. If you are able to donate furniture, used vehicles, dishes, towels or bedding, please notify your local shelter to make arrangements for this type of donation. Please help make wishes come true - contact you local advocacy program to discover what their unique needs are.

Donate Your Old Phone!

It's easy! Drop off your used phone at the local shelter or a cell phone store in your community. Cellular companies across the state have volunteered their time and talent to upgrade the technology in used phones to ensure that they have the capacity to reach 911 even without a service plan. Such phones are donated to shelters throughout South Dakota and then distributed to victims of crime who are living in danger. Having quick access to 911 gives survivors more confidence and more freedom to take back their lives.
